...THOSE AFFECTED AT A YOUNG AGE BY A LIFE CHANGING ILLNESS OR DISEASE. USING ART TO EMPOWER, PROVIDE HOPE AND CHANGE THE SOCIAL STIGMA OF DISEASE. A CHARITABLE PROJECT LAUNCHED 2024.
Dr Liz Murray - an award winning artist who after 10 years of working in the NHS was diagnosed with autoimmune disease and Stage 4 Endometriosis. After leaving her career as a doctor due to medical reasons, Liz realised there was a need to address social stigmatisation of disease and so started Mortal And Strong.
Mortal And Strong is a national campaign shining the spotlight on health inequalities. With a vision of being a sustainable project that runs every two years, 2024 sees the launch focusing on Women's health inequalities. By putting a spotlight on real women facing incurable disease at a young age, but focusing on the strength and messages of hope to help inspire and empower others. In turn reducing the stigma of disease, reducing the isolation that comes with a life changing diagnosis and raising awareness for a more supportive society. Dr Liz Murray was diagnosed with Lupus and Stage 4 Endometriosis. After suffering 6 miscarriages, working through Covid in Emergency Medicine and then having to leave her career for medical reasons Liz decided more needed to be done to address the social stigma of disease. Liz founded MAS to be a charitable project that every 2 years produces a campaign using art to address an area of health inequalities. 2024 is focusing on Women's Health and will run from International Women's Day 2024 - IWD 2025 ending with a big fundraising exhibition.
Mortal And Strong has applied for charity status (CIO - application pending). The vision is to produce a platform that produces campaigns to address different areas of health inequalities. To educate, raise awareness, empower and support. The vision behind MAS is unique - using art for change. Empowering artists and supporting an underfunded arts community (particularly artists limited by disability). Not only this, but MAS aims to provide a spotlight on smaller charities that are specialist to particular areas of health. By being a central platform of global health awareness, MAS can signpost people to the right areas of niche support. Bringing charities together for the benefit of everyone. By fundraising for MAS, fundraising is also supporting those smaller charities. Donations and funding will go to supporting the campaign, and in turn to 'pay it forward' each exhibition will also raise money for 20 other charities that have been featured during the campaign.
Through the year Liz Murray will be working with Laura Middleton-Hughes, a well-known breast cancer advocate, to Interview 100 women across the UK. The interviews allows the 'Voices' to share their honest experience of disease at a young age, but focusing on the strength they have found and how they are living life well. These Voices are being shared through a Podcast which has already gained regular international downloads within a month of launching. The podcast is available on all major platforms and will release two episodes a week for the year of the campaign. The BBC covered the story in regional press quoting 'a rolling stone that will gather pace'...
Liz's vision for turning the Japanese art of Kintsugi into a powerful photography series is transcending the narrative and message of MAS. Kintsugi traditionally uses gold to repair the caches of broken ceramics. The concept of Scars of Gold is new and unique - using real gold leaf to pull out the scars of the 100 Voices. The series is a poignant moment capturing the raw vulnerability and impact of disease, but showing it as a thing of beauty and strength. Photographer Sammy Weston has become part of the Mortal And Strong team leading the project to turn Liz's vision into a reality.
The project is curating 100 artworks inspired by the 100 Voices. Artists across the country, both acclaimed and emerging, have responded to an open call. Selected artists will produce artworks in every medium inspired by each Voice. This will support artists impacted by medical problems, but also use art as a powerful tool to resonate and amplify the messages of strength and hope. Art has a way of resonating where words can't. The 100 artworks will come together in 2025 for a fundraising exhibition where 20% of art sales will go to charities.
Please share the cost of a coffee (or two) to help support the charitable project...
